Ike's first week was pretty eventful. The first few days we hung out at home, getting used to the constant attention and activity required to feed and burp him, change his diaper, play, sleep, repeat. In those one to two hours where he's sleeping, Adam and I tried to get showered ourselves and eat, keep the house from getting too messy, and reply to all the well-wishers (thanks for keeping in touch, even if we haven't replied yet!).
OK, I'm back. As I was saying, taking care of a newborn, especially for novice parents like us, means constantly getting interrupted. Like Adam said, it's not "go go go," it's "stop stop stop." You have to be patient and expect less of yourself as far as getting non baby-related things done.
His first outing was on Saturday, June 23, and was a walk around the block. Our neighborhood goes in a large loop which takes about 25 minutes to walk around at a brisk pace, longer if you are strolling like we were. It was our first time testing out the new stroller, which is pretty deluxe. Adam even popped a wheelie.
On Monday, June 25 we made our first real trip out - to pay some bills and do a run to Wal-Mart for groceries and baby supplies. Ike definitely does not like the car seat. It's very upright and he slumps down and to the side. I have to sit in the backseat and hold his little head up. He was pretty interested in the lights and colors flashing by the car window, though, and in the store there was plenty of activity to keep him occupied, even in the middle of the day on a weekday. He was quite the ladies' man too, and we got stopped several times so strangers could coo over him (he even got blessed a couple of times).
On Tuesday, June 26 we made another, longer outing downtown for his first pediatrician appointment. He is doing great and has even gained 2.5 ounces. He wasn't too happy about getting naked to get weighed though, nor did he like the doctor's cold stethescope. After that we took him to the clinic to get some blood drawn for a test which looks for 66 different metabolic and genetic disorders. The test involved getting his heel pricked and taking out 5 drops of blood. They actually had to wait for each drop to fall down onto the sheet of paper too, which took a little while and which Ike did not like. We calmed him down and hit up the mall for some more baby-related shopping, including a deluxe nursing pillow and a window shade for the car. Finally, we stopped by our friends Lucy and Eric's place for a delicious homemade lunch and a meet-and-greet with their one-month-old, Emma.
Mom and Dad are looking forward to our first family visitors on Friday: Grandma Margie and Uncle Brian! Grandma will be here three weeks, Brian one week. We have enjoyed our time so far as a little family, and are looking forward to sharing the love with more people! Also can't wait to see Margie get a hold of little Ike! He will not see his Rock N Play sleeper for the next few weeks, that's for sure!
