Isaac's Latest Achievements

Isaac is one week shy of three months, and he's been growing so fast and surprising us with new achievements all the time.  At his last checkup a few weeks ago he weighed 12 pounds 12 ounces, and as of this week he's 14 pounds.  His legs have gotten really chubby and sturdy.  His cheeks are round and his arms are thickening up.

He smiles, coos, gurgles, makes raspberries, and lots of other sounds.  Click here for a video of him talking to me after a bath.

He makes eye contact and can look from side to side, and from one person to another.  He loves to sit in his infant seat and check out the mobile hanging above him.  He kicks his legs and makes the seat rock back and forth, and all the toys swing.

His face is very expressive, especially his eyebrows.  A lot of the time he has his eyebrows raised in a "surprised" look.  He also furrows his brow when he's mad,  and raises his eyebrows up and down.

He likes to make fists and wave his arms around.  In the last few weeks he discovered how to stuff his fist into his mouth, and has been doing so a lot of the time.  When he sucks on his fist, we can hear sucking noises from across the room.  He clenches his toes up or spreads them out, and loves to kick his legs around.  Recently he's also been lifting both legs together above his body.  On his stomach he tries to get his legs up under him, and can lift his head a little bit.  When he's laying down on an incline lately he's been lifting his head up like he's trying to sit up.  When we pull him forward by his arms, he keeps pushing his head forward like he wants to move in that direction.  When he's held in a sitting position, he can hold his head up pretty well.

Isaac has adapted really well to his schedule.  The first week or so that we tried to get him on a schedule he cried even more than before, but now he's settled right into it and hardly cries at all (and when he does, we know what he wants).  His days start at 6:00am with a feeding, then we have playtime either on the bed or in his infant seat.  Playtime is when he's most active and also wants to talk.  Anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half after he has woken up (so 7:00-7:30am) he starts showing signs of fussiness and tiredness: rubbing his eyes, whining, accepting a pacifier, staring off into space.  At this time we swaddle him up and put him back into his Rock N Play sleeper in a dark room with his pacifier, and within minutes he's asleep.  His nap lasts anywhere from 1-2 hours, then we repeat the whole cycle.  It has worked really well for us because we all know what to anticipate and how to plan our day.  Before when he cried I never knew why.  Now he hardly cries but when he does, I know if it's because he's hungry or tired.

Isaac loves to be the center of attention.  If we put him down in his playpen after a few minutes he starts calling out to see if anyone's out there.  If you lean over him and play with the toys on his mobile, he's captivated and will chatter and coo away.  Sometimes we'll put him down for his nap and leave the room, then he'll start fussing so we go back in, and as soon as we open the door he'll stop fussing, crack a huge smile and start cooing like, "there you are, let's play!"

He's also just starting to laugh, although he hasn't quite got it down yet so it sounds like, "heh heh heh."  He's been drooling a lot and we've started to use a bib.

Isaac gets indignant sometimes when he's cranky and whining, then we give him his pacifier, he chomps on it and makes a noise like, "hmmph hmmph hmmph" like, "what took you so long?"  He can really work over a pacifier.
