This last week was a busy one! My new boss started two weeks ago but only arrived in Cancun on Monday, and so far everything looks very positive. Since he's here and his boss, the VP are in town, it's meant longer work hours this week and no lunches at home.
On Tuesday morning I was heading out the door when Isaac stood up on his own for the first time! Luckily we always have a camera nearby. I like how he plants his feet before he tries to balance on his own.
VIDEO: Standing Up!
In Mexico, Mother's Day, which is a VERY big deal, is always on May 10, regardless of the day of the to week that it falls on. This year it was Friday. I got a lovely surprise at the office when a large arrangement of roses showed up for me! Adam had told me the night before that he was whisking us away to Puerto Morelos for the weekend! It's a small fishing village about twenty minutes south of Cancun. We'd been there many times to go to the beach and snorkeling, but never stayed there overnight. It's a very small town, very rustic with a smooth white beach and calm waters. So small in fact, there are no chain restaurants like Starbucks or McDonalds, and not even a grocery store. On Friday night we headed down there. Adam had rented us a room in a 6-room hotel a block from the beach. Our "room" was actually a suite, complete with living room, kitchenette, and balcony. We had a late dinner at a Uruguayan restaurant, which was surprisingly good. Somehow the Argentineans (and Uruguayans I guess) have reached the most remote corner of Mexico.
Sidebar: although it's a small town, it's a tourist town and Adam and I were very pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of food in Puerto Morelos. Most restaurants have less than ten tables, and don't look like much, but we had delicious steaks and chorizo, wonderful pizza and lasagna, tasty enchiladas and quesadillas with handmade tortillas.
On Saturday morning I headed to the Jungle Spa for a massage, which was highly recommended by Trip Advisor (and at $40 for an hour massage, how could you say no?). The directions to the Jungle Spa read something like this: "go to the edge of civilization, then take a right and continue 500 meters." It reminded me a lot of Rio Bec Dreams, a hotel we stayed at in rural Campeche during our Christmas 2011 trip. The Jungle Spa is a co-op of Mayan women, run by a colorful American ex-pat from Ohio, who offer massages and spa treatments in a jungle setting to supplement their income. Anyway, it was very relaxing and the price was definitely right.
In the afternoon we went to the beach, which is quite the task nowadays with baby and all his accoutrements, plus the tents, two beach chairs, drinks, reading material, towels, sunblock, etc. Isaac has such a pale complexion and the sun is so fierce here, I slather him with sunblock and cover him up like a Bedouin. He only wants to stand up anymore, and the sand is the perfect environment for him to fall down and stand up again. He absolutely loves the water, and crawled directly towards it and into it until the salt water in his eyes got to be too much to bear. He insisted on eating sand too, although he grimaced with every mouthful.
This morning we headed "downtown" for some breakfast Mexican-style. I had the enchiladas, pictured below, while Adam ordered the huevos motulenos and some quesadillas. Since my enchiladas had green sauce, which was not spicy at all, Adam scooped up some green sauce from the dish in the center of the table and spooned it liberally onto his quesadilla. Only it was habanero! Since we were both drinking coffee, he grabbed Isaac's sippy cup, twirled off the lid, and took several gulps of water to cool the fire. The offending green salsa is pictured below. Isaac felt only half-hearted about his plantain.
Finally below are some shots from our hotel room and my final Mother's Day gift, a lovely picture frame. In all I feel so pampered and loved by my two favorite guys!
